Write an Introduction in 4 Steps

Your essay needs an introduction so that your reader follows your (brilliant!) argument from start to finish. The introduction's job is to take readers who aren't even thinking about your essay's topic and - within the space of a few sentences - to make them froth at the mouth to hear your position on it.  OK, I may be exaggerating to say your readers will salivate, but it is certainly no exaggeration to say that a well-written introduction is one of best investments you can make in an essay.  And it ain't easy to write a great introduction.  Here are my suggestions for how to conceptualize your intro, and also how to get it started with a strong "hook".
